I am a delicacy from afar, brought back from China in traditional porcelain pots. A treasure for perfumers, an inspiration for tales and legends, my osmanthus flower fills hearts with a tender feeling of sweetness, voluptuousness, and nostalgia.

I am an exquisite elixir whose olfactory beauty is unparalleled. My floral heart, as soft as velvet, is supported by the roundness of musk and the vibrancy of pink pepper. Assertive and refined, my trail leaves a subtle and luminous imprint.

I am the memory of an emotion, felt by my perfumer on the other side of the world upon discovering the Forbidden City: striking and persistent. Poetry of a different moment, lived with dazzling wonder.

I am Osmanthus, a floral by Jean-Claude Ellena, 2000.

Ellena's landmark soliflore from 2000. Jasmine tea, suede, rosy blush, and apricot fuzz.

History & Significance:
The first true osmanthus on the modern market. "When it was founded in 2000, The Different Company wanted to showcase exceptional natural raw materials. Jean-Claude Ellena decided to dedicate one of the three compositions he created for the brand to this tiny Chinese flower, which had rarely been used as a major note until then. The perfumer treated it with transparency and delicacy, inspired by the emotion he felt when he discovered the Forbidden City in Beijing" (Osmanthus in Perfumery - NEZ + LMR Handbook, 2025)

Made in France

Editor's Notes

This is one of the earliest entries for osmanthus in the world of niche perfumery, predating Osmanthe Yunnan (Hermès, 2005) and Osmanthus Interdite (Parfum d’Empire, 2007). There is an argument, however, that the Different Company’s Osmanthus (2000) is the most faithful headspace of the precious flower. After the green settles - pure citrus and chlorophyll freshness, some leafy rustle and twig snap, osmanthus is there, perfectly centered. Jean-Claude Ellena enumerates each facet of the flower, though nothing stands out over the other. Jasmine tea, pink rosy blush, velvety suede, silky tannins, apricot fuzz. Softness, but not without textured nuance. The happiness of mandarin, bergamot, and orange, the salubrious impression of herbs, a soft landing of musk. Restraint, delicacy, truth.
