Vetiver Fragrances

Vetiver is a grass root from tropical Asia, distilled into one of the most complex and variable materials in perfumery. It can smell of cold earth, fresh grass, woodsmoke, rubber, or the dry mineral quality of stone — often several of these simultaneously, and differently on each person who wears it. It is one of the few materials that improves significantly with concentration and age. NOAH stocks some of the finest vetiver fragrances available in Australia, from classical cologne interpretations through to modern naturalistic compositions. Samples available for every fragrance.

Vetiver is extracted from the roots of Vetiveria zizanioides, a grass native to India and now cultivated in Haiti, Java, and Réunion — each region producing an oil with meaningfully different character. Haitian vetiver is smoky and dark, with a rooty earthiness underneath. Javanese vetiver is softer and greener. Réunion vetiver, sometimes called bourbon vetiver, is the most refined and the most expensive, with a woody-mineral quality that sits closer to the great woods than to the earth. A perfumer's choice of vetiver origin shapes the fragrance as decisively as the choice of rose type.

Vetiver has been central to fine perfumery since Guerlain's Vétiver in 1959 — itself a refinement of a much older tradition of vetiver-based Eau de Cologne. What Guerlain established, and what every serious vetiver fragrance since has worked with or against, is the idea of vetiver as the ideal masculine cologne material: cool, clean, deeply natural, and lasting on skin for hours without becoming heavy.

Heeley's Vetiver Veritas is the most intellectually rigorous vetiver in the NOAH collection. Working exclusively with natural materials, perfumer James Heeley has produced something that smells simultaneously of the raw ingredient and of a perfectly constructed fragrance — a difficult balance that most synthetic-heavy interpretations fail to achieve. It is also, characteristically, exceptionally long-lasting.

Creed's Original Vetiver places the material in a classic Cologne structure — citrus and spice over a vetiver base — producing something immediately accessible without being simple. It is one of the cleanest vetiver fragrances available, and one of the most versatile.

Parfum d'Empire's Vetiver Bourbon is built around the Réunion origin — the most refined and mineral expression of the material. The composition is spare and architectural, letting the quality of the raw material speak rather than surrounding it with supporting notes. It is a fragrance for people who already know they love vetiver.

Essential Parfums Mon Vetiver takes the opposite approach — the vetiver here is warm and slightly sweet, placed in a context of woods and amber rather than the cold mineral tradition. It is the most approachable vetiver in the collection and a natural starting point for those new to the material.

The Vetiver Fragrance Sample Pack offers six expressions of the material across different styles and origins — the most efficient introduction to what vetiver can do. Individual samples are available for every fragrance in the collection.
